Statement of Significance
Description of Historic Place
The Frederick Gregory Residence is a two-storey Craftsman home with an overhanging cornice, an off-centered entrance and a two-storey square bay window. It is located on Horsfield Street in the Trinity Royal Heritage Preservation Area of Saint John.
Heritage Value
The Frederick Gregory Residence is designated a Local Historic Place for being part of the rebuilding of a Saint John residential district after the Great Saint John Fire of 1877. Although there are questions in regards to the age of this particular building, it is amongst a collection of commercial and residential, Italianate and Second Empire buildings that were built between 1877 and 1881 after two thirds of the City of Saint John were destroyed by the fire. The correct age of Frederick Gregory Residence is uncertain. This may have been either an 1878 Italianate home that underwent a complete façade renovation or a Craftsman residence constructed about 1916. It is known that stevedore Frederick Gregory had a wooden home with a cased brick façade built on this site shortly after the 1877 fire and lived in it until 1892. Miss Jessie Earle operated a boarding house in the late 1890's.
