Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

Built around 1898, the DeGrâce Residence is located on DeGrâce Street in Shippagan. The site includes the two-storey Dutch Colonial style dwelling, the shed and the grounds.

Heritage Value

The heritage value of the DeGrâce residence lies in its historical interest. It is one of the oldest residences in the town of Shippagan. Johnny DeGrâce had this house built around 1898 by Mr. Chrysologue DeGrâce.

Heritage value is also associated with its architectural interest. The structure is an excellent example of the Dutch Colonial style, which appeared in Canada towards the early twentieth century. While the initial structure has undergone significant renovations since it was built, it does present traditional elements of that style, such as the high gambrel roof and gable dormers.
