Statement of Significance
Description of Historic Place
The Freethy Residence is a one and a one-half storey Craftsman bungalow located in one of Nanaimo's oldest residential neighbourhoods. The historic place is confined to the building footprint.
Heritage Value
Built in 1911, the Freethy Residence is a very good example of a finely-detailed Craftsman Bungalow. The horizontal massing, full front verandah, tapered columns and scroll-cut vergeboards are typical features of this style.
Located within a grouping of superior historic buildings, the Freethy Residence speaks to the development of this area, after the turn of the 20th century, as a middle to upper income residential neighbourhood, a comfortable distance away from the busy commercial core and adjacent mixed-use neighbourhoods.
