Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

Marjillee Lutes Residence is located on 860 Front Mountain Road in Moncton. It consists of a 1-½ story Greek revival tri-gable clapboard-sided farmhouse structure, built in 1878, with a detached barn.

Heritage Value

Marjillee Lutes Residence is designated a Local Historic Place for its residential Greek revival architecture and its association with the Lutes Family.

Marijillee Lutes Residence is an excellent example of the traditional 1-½ story gabled farmhouse with a wing. All of the exterior features that denote this style are intact, from the window and door entablatures to the moulded returned eaves. The original attached barn is still on the property, but it has been moved to the north east of the main structure due to fire regulations. Its location at the foot of Lutes Mountain allows for a panoramic vista of the entire City of Moncton.

Marjillee Lutes Residence is also designated for its association with the Lutes Family. The original Lutes’ (Lutz) were the family of Michael Lutz, who arrived in Moncton from Pennsylvania in 1766 with seven other families of German descent. These eight families represent the first permanent settlers in Moncton. The family made its way to what is now Lutes Mountain in Moncton’s north end. Rufus Lutz and Rachel Rogers were the first to own the land on which the Marjillee Lutes Residence sits. Their son and daughter-in-law, James Renwick Lutz and Jennie Horseman Lutz eventually left this property. Marjillee, their grandniece, became the owner of the residence.
