Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

Chatham Railway Station is located on Johnson Street within the Historic Water Street Business District. This rectangular single-story brick building with three steeply pitched hipped roofs is bounded on the north by Station Wharf and the Miramichi River.

Heritage Value

Chatham Railway Station is designated a Local Historic Place for its architectural integrity and for its association with the community’s growth.

Chatham Railway Station was built in 1912 as the ICR station to replace the 1876 former Chatham Branch Railway station situated one mile inland. Contractors were Messrs. Morrison and Clarke. Its brick construction was different to its traditional Maritime wooden predecessors.

Chatham Railway Station is also recognized for its association with the community's growth during an era of rail transportation that helped open up Maritime communities to transporting goods inland and to the west year round. Its geographical location next to Maritime waters exemplified its importance and versatility superseding its surrounding inland connecting stations.
