Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

Salon de Couture Modifique is 2-story wooden commercial building located on Albert Street, in Tracadie-Sheila. It is recognizable by its distinctive store front that is taller than the gable roof and by the awnings above the doors and the ornamentation above the windows.

Heritage Value

Salon de Couture Modifique is designated a Local Historic Place for the economic role it has played in the community over the years.

Located in the downtown area, the Salon de Couture Modifique has been a recognizable feature on Albert Street since its construction in circa 1944. The building has been handed down through three generations of the same family. Originally a second-hand shop owned by Agnes Aufrey, Jos Rousselle subsequently turned it into a recycling depot for empty bottles, copper, iron, and batteries. The building has also served as a meeting room and as the second Provincial Court in Tracadie.
