Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

The McNeil/Gallant Store was built between 1895 and 1900 in the heart of the town. Located on Main Street in Shediac, the two storey wooden building with brick storefront housed a grocery and retail store.

Heritage Value

The heritage value of the McNeil-Gallant Store as a local historic place lies in its association with the grocery trade. The family of Edward McNeil owned the store until 1950. The grocery store always had lots of customers since it was located next to the railroad station. Workers and travelers taking the 7:00am train to Moncton formed the customer base. From 1950 to the 1980s, the business served as the local bus stop. Since 1975, the building has been occupied by Gallant TV. Although it has undergone a number of renovations that have greatly changed its original appearance, some major structural elements of the original building remain.
