Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

The Former Protestant Church is a rectangular one-and-a-half storey building of vernacular religious architecture located on Amirault Street in Dieppe. The building, now a daycare centre, is composed of two structures attached together to form a “T”. The northern section is the Former Protestant Church.

Heritage Value

The Former Protestant Church is designated a Local Historic Place for its architecture and for its commercial transformation.

The Former Protestant Church is a good example of vernacular religious architecture typical of small country churches, being a narrow building featuring a pronounced roof. The returned eaves of Greek inspiration and the shape of the roof suggest that the building could date from the late 19th century. The portico and the rounded arches show its religious origin.

The Former Protestant Church is also recognized for its transformation into a viable commercial building. Since being a church, a roller skating rink, an air conditioning company, and three daycare centres have in turn set up shop at this address, adding to the commercial landscape of Amirault Street.
