Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

97 Rice Street is a two-storey, brick Foursquare residence with a lateral ell from the end of the 19th century. This house is located on Rice Street in Edmundston.

Heritage Value

97 Rice Street is designated a Local Historic Place for its architecture and for its association with the neighbouring house.

97 Rice Street is recognized for its architecture. Still serving as a family residence today, this house, built in 1897, is one of the few houses from the 19th century located in the heart of the city of Edmundston. It is a good example of Foursquare residential architecture through its two-storey square massing with a lateral ell and its hipped roof with a wide cornice.

97 Rice Street is also recognized for its link with the neighbouring house. This house is called the “jumelle” [twin] by most of the older population because of the house that stands right beside it, built around the same time and featuring a similar plan but with its architectural components reversed.
