23 Euston Street is a wood framed Maritime Vernacular Cottage. Features typical of the Maritime Vernacular Cottage style include a gable roof, symmetrical facade and a centre gable dormer. The designation encompasses the building's exterior and parcel; it does not include the building's interior.

Valeur patrimoniale

The heritage value of 23 Euston Street lies in its role as an early example of a Maritime Vernacular Cottage style home in the City; its association with the Peake family; and its role in supporting the Euston Street streetscape.

The wealthy and prominent Peake Family owned and rented out small homes throughout Charlottetown in the mid 19th Century. This was one of their many business ventures that included shipbuilding, ship brokering, and banking. 23 Euston Street and a number of other rental properties were sold after the death of James Peake senior in 1860. It is not clear who purchased 23 Euston Street, however, in 1871, a Captain David Henderson was the owner. A later owner of the home was schoolteacher, John Butler.

23 Euston Street was influenced by the Maritime Vernacular Cottage style of architecture. The style was common in mid 19th Century Charlottetown. A distinctively Maritime style, its features include a gable roof, symmetrical facade and a large, centrally placed gable dormer.

One of the earlier homes in this section of Euston Street and a well maintained example of one of the Peake homes, 23 Euston helps support the streetscape.
