The Guidelines provide practical advice for decision making when interventions are undertaken on historic places. A single historic place often encompasses various types of resources, such as:
- Archaeological Sites
- Landscape
- Buildings
- Engineering Works
When planning a project, all resources and their related guidelines must be considered.
"Recommended" and "not recommended" interventions to historic places are detailed in ascending sequence from minimal (lesser) to major (greater) interventions. The guidelines do not provide case-specific advice, nor do they eliminate the need for qualified practitioners.
During a conservation project, it may be necessary to strike a balance between health and safety regulations, land usage or other regulations, on the one hand, and the conservation of the heritage value and character-defining elements of the historic place on the other. The section entitled "Other Considerations" addresses this issue.
