Step 1: Think about what makes this place important.
- Is the place associated with someone famous or a historic event?
- Does the place have special meaning?
- If it is a building, is the architecture special?
Step 2: Consider your answers to the questions above. Does the place have
- Local significance? Contact your municipality to consider municipal registration.
- Does the place have provincial significance? Go to Step 3!
Step 3: Seek provincial designation.

How can I get a formally recognized place listed on the Canadian Register of Historic Places?
All historic places officially recognized at the municipal, provincial, or federal level will eventually be placed on the Canadian Register, subject to the owner’s consent.
