Do you know a historic place that is important to your community, region, or territory? You can nominate it for designation as a historic place! Follow the steps below.
Step 1: Make sure the place hasn’t already been designated as a historic place.
- Check the Canadian Register of Historic Places at http://www.historicplaces.ca/
- Contact your territorial Registrar to confirm at culturalplaces@gov.nt.ca or (867) 873-7368
Step 2: Think about what makes this place important.
- Was the place associated with someone famous or a historic event?
- If it’s a building, is the architecture special?
- Does the place have special meaning because of its landscape, spiritual or cultural associations?
Step 3: Consider your answers to the questions above. Is the place important to:
- Your local community? Contact your local municipality for more information.
- The Northwest Territories? Go to Step 4!
Step 4: Seek a territorial designation.
- In the Northwest Territories, Territorial Historic Site designation means that the place will be officially recognized as a historic place. This designation is commemorative only and does not offer legal protection, though it may be granted in exceptional circumstances.
Step 5: Download an application form here or contact the territorial Registrar at at culturalplaces@gov.nt.ca or (867) 873-7368 to get the process started.
- The application will give you the chance to explain why you think the place is important. You will also need to supply photographs and maps, as well as historical research.
Step 6: Complete and return your application form. Now, the process is in full swing!
- An evaluation of the place will be done.
- The time needed to complete this process varies from case to case.
How can I get a historic place listed on the Canadian Register of Historic Places?
All historic places officially recognized at the municipal, territorial, and federal level will eventually be placed on the Canadian Register, subject to the owner’s consent.
