Do you know of a historic place that is important to your community, region, or territory? You can nominate it for designation as a historic place! Follow the steps below.
Step 1: Make sure the place hasn’t already been designated as a historic place.
Step 2: Think about what makes this place important.
- Is the place associated with someone famous or a historic event?
- If it’s a building, is the architecture special?
- Does the place have special meaning because of its landscape, spiritual or cultural associations?
Step 3: Contact the appropriate government.
- If the place is in the city of Whitehorse, you can have it designated by the city. Contact the Planning Division of Whitehorse for more information here planning.services@whitehorse.ca or at (867) 668-8335. See http://www.city.whitehorse.yk.ca for more information
- If the place is outside Whitehorse or if you think it is important to the entire territory, go to step 4!
Step 4: Seek a territorial designation.
- In Yukon, this means a place will be officially recognized as a historic place and will be given legal protection.
Step 5: Contact the Yukon Registrar and ask for an application form to get the process started. You can also download the application form here
- The application form will give you the chance to explain why you think the place is important. You will also need to supply photographs, as well as historical research if appropriate.
Step 6: Complete and return your application form. Now, the process is in full swing!
- An evaluation of the place will be done.
- The process takes at least six months.
How can I get a historic place listed on the Canadian Register of Historic Places?
