Description of Historic Place
Captain Peter Hanson House is an asymmetrical 2 ½ storey Queen Anne Revival residence located on Bridge Street in Sackville. It is part of a unique streetscape that is concentrated with historic houses.
Heritage Value
Captain Peter Hanson House is designated a Local Historic Place for its architecture and its association with the original occupant.
Built in 1897, Captain Peter Hanson House is an excellent example of the Queen Anne Revival style. The residence is made of wooden shingles in many distinctive patterns. The front façade is asymmetrical and includes two-story bays, with the second bay supporting a triangular pediment at the roof line. It is painted in yellow shades that are from the Victorian period. Spindles and other ornamentations are found decorating the dormer and inset porch. The front entrance has a distinctive paint job that emphasizes the sidelights, door panels and transom.
Captain Peter Hanson House is also recognized for the original owner. Captain Peter Hanson is recognized as one of the businessmen and politicians who participated in the boom in Sackville that led to incorporation in 1903. Born in Sweden, Captain Hanson had spent many years at sea with Wm Thompson and Company of Saint John, as shipmaster, sailing to all parts of the world. Starting with a grocery and boot and shoe store, he went on to build many commercial buildings. In addition to his keen interest in civic affairs, his main business for 24 years was as Customs Collector for the Port of Sackville.
