Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

This property, known as the Kilburn House, is situated on the northeast corner of Smythe Street in Fredericton. This two-storey Beaux-Arts Classical style structure was constructed in 1910 by Moses Mitchell.

Heritage Value

The heritage value of the Kilburn House resides in its expression of the Beaux-Arts Classical architectural style as constructed by Moses Mitchell. This prolific contractor/builder and mayor of Fredericton built this two-storey structure for the Kilburn family. The value of this house is also associated with its ownership by this prominent family. John Kilburn had this house built for his son, Wardlow Sterling Kilburn. Both John and his son Wardlow were wealthy lumbermen who also had connections to the Hartt Boot and Shoe Factory and the John Palmer Company. Wardlow S. Kilburn and his family lived in this house from its construction until 1941 when it was converted into a nurses’ residence for the Victoria Public Hospital.
