Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

The Lac Baker Grotto is located on the side of the mountain to the west of Saint-Thomas-d'Aquin Church at the top of the large stairway above Route 120. The statue of the Blessed Virgin is erected inside a rock and is decorated with an illuminated cross.

Heritage Value

The Lac Baker grotto is designated a Local Historic Place because of its symbolic importance in the community and its location. The grotto was erected in 1945 by Father Gaston Champagne and is an integral part of the village of Lac Baker. The long steps leading up the hillside are especially characteristic of Lac Baker. It represents the attachment of the parishioners to the Blessed Virgin and offers a wonderful view of the natural beauty of Lac Baker. A miniature replica of the church is located midway up the stairs. It is a place of religious significance visited by village residents.
