Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

171 Wellington Street is on the southeast corner of Wellington Street and Alfred Street, in the City of Brantford. The one-and-a-half storey, buff brick residence was constructed in circa 1875.

The property was designated by the City of Brantford in 1991, for its cultural heritage value, under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act, By-law 97-91.

Heritage Value

171 Wellington Street was constructed in circa 1875, and is a good example of a Regency Cottage. This is reflected in the rectangular footprint with the gently sloped hip roof, the large windows, the veranda with detailed styling and the plain boxed cornice. Four chimneys constructed in buff brick are symmetrically placed. The buff brick is laid out in stretcher bond, with red brick quoins on all corners of the house. The arches above the windows are also in red brick. The front view of the structure displays a three-bay facade with large double-hung windows and storms. The outstanding feature of the front facade is the veranda complete with ornate wood trimmings and the central gable in the roof. The front entrance features three stained glass windows.
