Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

Sam LeBlanc Barn is a rectangular one-and-a-half storey barn with a wooden frame and a gable roof located on Acadie Road in Cap-Pelé.

Heritage Value

Sam LeBlanc Barn is designated a Local Historic Place for its architecture and for its association Acadian agriculture and well-to-do farmers during the last quarter of the 19th century.

Sam LeBlanc Barn is the oldest barn in Cap-Pelé and area. It is a good example of an Acadian agricultural barn from the 19th century. It was built by Anselme "Sam" LeBlanc around 1880 using a rectangular plan with a wooden frame. This one-and-a-half storey structure is topped with a gable roof. It is said to have replaced another barn dating back to around 1830, when the patriarchal home was built. This house survived until the 1990s.

During the years 1830-1900, the LeBlanc family was one of the most well-to-do farming families in Cap-Pelé. In 1837, the property was assessed at 200 pounds sterling. In 1861, the property, assessed at $135, included 30 acres of cleared land and 20 acres of fallow land. The stock consisted of 1 horse, 3 dairy cows, 1 pair of oxen, 3 horned animals, and 3 pigs. The land produced 80 bushels of wheat, 30 bushels of oats, 20 bushels of barley, 6 bushels of buckwheat, and 200 bushels of potatoes.
