Description du lieu patrimonial

This one storey, red brick, cottage has a low hip roof and large front windows flanking the main entrance. Located on Bruton Street, west of Port Hope's downtown core, the James Leslie Cottage is set in a mature residential neighbourhood. The James Leslie Cottage is at 118 Bruton Street.

It is recognized for its heritage value, by the Town of Port Hope By-law 42/1993 Schedule B-3, passed on August 30, 1993.

Valeur patrimoniale

Built in circa 1850, the James Leslie Cottage is a good example of the simple Ontario Cottage style of architecture prevalent, in Port Hope, in the mid 19th century. Its symmetrical front facade has the original 6 over 6 windows flanking the main entrance, with sidelights and transom.

The cottage is historically associated with James Leslie, an Irish immigrant. A plasterer by trade, James Leslie occupied the cottage for several years before selling it to Samuel Sevey in 1857.
