Description du lieu patrimonial
Terry Hughes Park is a 10 acre (4 hectare) park, consisting of playing fields and a perimeter walking path, at the intersection of Eighth Avenue and Park Crescent in the Glenbrooke North neighbourhood of New Westminster.
Valeur patrimoniale
Constructed in 1958, Terry Hughes Park is valued by the community and the neighbouring school as a large and first-class recreational area with a playground and playing fields that are easily accessible. It is also a good example of the City's park planning policy to accommodate the different recreational needs of a community within a single space. As well, this park is one of the first like it to be created in the City.
The location of the park is important for its historic connection to the location of Glen Creek, after which the neighbourhood is named and which is now buried in a culvert.
Of high significance is the name of the park, which honours the memory of Terry Hughes. Hughes was a New Westminster teenager who lost his life on November 8th, 1959, while trying to rescue a nine-year-old girl from the Fraser River.
