Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

240 Union Street West is situated on the south side of the street, between Athol Street and Tower Street South, in the Town of Fergus, now the Township of Centre Wellington. The two-storey cut-limestone building, constructed in circa 1870, was designed in the Georgian style.

The property was designated, for its architectural value, by the Township of Centre Wellington, under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act (By-law 2006-017).

Heritage Value

240 Union Street is a fine example of a Georgian-style house. It is a two-storey, single-detached structure with classic proportions that was built in circa 1870. The cut-limestone, broken course exterior walls are embellished by quoins. The roof is a medium pitched gable with a double stone chimney on either side. The symmetrical façade features a three-bay front, with one window on either side of the central entranceway. The windows are 6 over 6 sash, accented by louvered shutters. The first storey windows are surmounted by voussoirs and a flat transom. Sidelights highlight the front entranceway.
