Statement of Significance
Description of Historic Place
The Howard House is located in the community of Cape Wolfe in western Prince County, PEI, on treed lawns. Howard's Cove wharf and lighthouse are in the vicinity. The registration includes the footprint of the building and the associated land parcel.
Heritage Value
The Howard House was registered because of its Gothic Revival elements, such as the centre gable roof design. The house is a well preserved example of this style in western PEI. It is located near Howard's Cove adjacent to the Northumberland Strait. This community's namesake, Robert Howard, came from Ireland to PEI in approximately the year 1819. By the 1880s, there were three descendents (William, Thomas, and Matthew) all living in the area. This house was constructed circa 1880 by William Howard. The back portion of the house was the original dwelling and is much older, dating from the 1830s. It shows evidence of early post and beam construction.
