Description of Historic Place
Stonehurst Manor is a two and one-half storey, stone-clad Tudor Revival mansion, located in the Chilliwack Proper neighbourhood, close to downtown Chilliwack, British Columbia. The historic place includes the house.
Heritage Value
Stonehurst Manor is an early 20th-century residence located adjacent to downtown Chilliwack. The historic place has aesthetic value as an example of Tudor Revival Style architecture. It demonstrates the social, cultural and aesthetic value of the elite of the 20th century, including values such as appreciation of architectural elegance and grand interior spaces, leisure and recreation, formal landscaped gardens and scenic views. Stonehurst Manor also has social value as it has served as a residence for Chauncey Erwin Eckert, a prominent community leader and land developer.
Character-Defining Elements
The key elements that define the character of Stonehurst Manor include its:
- location close to downtown Chilliwack
- continuing residential use
- residential form, scale and massing as expressed by its two and one-half storey height plus basement, cross-gabled roofline, front hip-roofed verandah with stacked sleeping verandah above, gable over front entry, hip-roofed side entry verandah, and irregular window placement
- random ashlar granite construction, including foundations, ground floor cladding and square column, and internal and external chimneys, with cast concrete sills, lintels and column caps
- design features of the Tudor Revival style such as: stucco and wood half- timbering on the upper floors and gable ends, diamond-point triangular eave brackets, symmetrically tapered fascia bands above the second floor windows, open toungue-and-groove soffits with exposed purlins and rafters, openwork timber balustrades
- fenestration, including banks of wooden-sash casement windows with transoms, 1-over-1 double-hung wooden-sash windows in single and double assembly, single and double wooden-sash casement, extensive use of leaded glass throughout, and stained glass panels on the south side
- stone wall with serrated top, stone gateposts with serrated tops in the front sidewalk, and brass letters spelling "Stonehurst" set in the sidewalk between the gateposts.
