Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

The Bordage General Store is a wooden two-story commercial building that was constructed in the early 20th century. It is located along the main street and in the heart of the village at 10520 Principale Street.

Heritage Value

The heritage value of the Bordage General Store as a local historic place stems from its use as a general store for more than three generations. The store was built by Auguste J. Bordage around 1902 and then handed over to his son, Edmond. The store served the surrounding population for over 70 years, from 1902 to 1979. The store also housed a branch of the Provincial Bank of Canada from 1920 to 1973.

The heritage value of the Bordage General Store also lies in the importance of its former owners, who made their mark on the socio political scene at the regional and provincial levels. The store’s builder, Auguste J. Bordage, served as a member of the Legislative Assembly in Fredericton from 1917 to 1944, for a total of 27 consecutive years. His son, Edmond Bordage, was the first mayor of Saint-Louis-de-Kent and held office from 1966 to 1971.
