Statement of Significance
Description of Historic Place
1004 Fairfield Road is a wood frame two-storey Victorian cottage located in the heart of Victoria's Fairfield neighbourhood.
Heritage Value
1004 Fairfield Road, built in 1893, is valued for its architecture and what its construction says about the working middle class in the late nineteenth century in Victoria.
1004 Fairfield Road is valued as a rare surviving example of a small Victorian cottage. It was one of a group of four houses built between 1892 and 1896 near this corner, including 611 Vancouver Street. It was the duplicate of the house at 1002 Fairfield Road (now altered); the fourth house is now gone. It has value as an example of residences built for those in the working class along the main transportation route of its day.
Despite its small size, the cottage has several distinctive architectural features that have been enhanced through a recent sensitive restoration that won a Heritage Canada Achievement Award for the owners.
