Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

Assomption Cemetery (Portage Road) is the town’s second Catholic cemetery. This cemetery with monuments, tombstones and markers is located among roads and paths on Portage Road in Grand Falls.

Heritage Value

Assomption Cemetery (Portage Road) is designated a Local Historic Place because it is the town’s largest cemetery and contains the tombstones of local dignitaries.

The land was donated to the church by James Mulherin in 1896 when it became evident that the other cemetery near the Assomption Church would soon be used to full capacity. Assomption Cemetery (Portage Road) features an imposing monument for Senator John Costigan, who died in 1916. It is also the final resting place of many notables and dignitaries from the region.
