Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

Pine Hill Cemetery is an early Baptist cemetery in a pastoral setting. It is located at the end of Broadway Boulevard between Terrace and High Streets in Grand Falls.

Heritage Value

Pine Hill Cemetery is designated a Local Historic Place because it represents an important religious community in the history of Grand Falls.

The land was donated to the Baptist Church by Charles A. Hammond, a maître d’hôtel, politician, and man of the Church. Although the cemetery was officially transferred to the Baptist Church in 1878, burials took place there as far back as 1855. The donor of the land is buried there, as is William D. Kearney, known for his epic poem entitled "The Open Hand: An Epic Poem Dealing With the Early Settlement of Maine and New Brunswick", published in 1864.
