Description of Historic Place
The Doig Residence, located at 98 Goderich Street West, is situated on the north side of Goderich Street West, west of West Street, in Seaforth, Municipality of Huron East. The property consists of a one-and-a-half storey brick residence that was constructed circa 1850.
The property was designated by the former Town of Seaforth (now Municipality of Huron East) in 1978 for its heritage value under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act (By-law 12 for 1978).
The Doig Residence is a one-and-a-half-storey brick farm house built circa 1850 in the Georgian style (Seaforth Farm House) of architecture. Typical of this style is the three-bay facade with central entrance highlighted by sidelights and decorative transom. A small, centrally located dormer is also typical of farm houses of the period in which it was built. The facade is highlighted by two large six over six sash windows and shutters. The Doig Residence is also notable as one of the first brick residences constructed in the Seaforth area.
