Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

192 River Valley Drive is an attractive two-storey building, located close to the curb of a busy commercial street in Grand Bay-Westfield. The property, which has been used as both a residence and as a business, has recently been renovated in a manner that is in keeping with the original exterior design.

Heritage Value

Built ca. 1940 as a doctor’s office and 14-bed nursing home, 192 River Valley Drive is designated a Local Historic Place for its historical significance as a well-known element of the busy business district of Grand Bay-Westfield.

When the doctor’s office and nursing home ceased to operate, the property was converted into a residence and continued to be used as such until the early 1990s. At this time the building, which had fallen into disrepair, was purchased and renovated for commercial use. The subsequent owner runs his insurance agency out of the building and leases to several other tenants. The refurbished structure presents an attractive component of the River Valley Drive streetscape.

The building has retained many of its original features, including its rectangular massing, medium-pitched roof, side gables and an open balcony on the second storey (formerly enclosed). The small office attached to the main building was originally a garage.
