Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

Post Office of 1897 is located at the intersection of Bonar Law Avenue and Main Street in the Village of Rexton. The designation of this two storey Greek Revival wood framed structure is confined to the footprint of building.

Heritage Value

Post Office of 1897 is designated a Local Historic Place for its historical location of post offices in Rexton.

Post Office of 1897 signifies the only time that post office operations were located on the north side of the Richiboucto River in the village. With Martin Lanigan as postmaster, having been preceded by four others since the inception of the position in 1868, post office operations were moved to the Post Office of 1897 located on the north side of the community. In 1912, Lanigan was dismissed for political partisanship reasons. Post office operations were returned to the south side of the river.

It was also in this time period with Martin Lanigan as postmaster that the mailing address changed on letters and parcels. Before 1901, the village was known as Kingston and in that year the community changed its name to Rexton.
