Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

Corner Store is located on Principale Street in Tracadie-Sheila. This 2-storey shingled building dominates the intersection of Principale and Louis G. Daigle streets, called the “corner” by the residents of the former village of Sheila.

Heritage Value

Corner Store is designated a Local Historic Place for its location in the commercial core of the former town of Sheila and its importance to the community’s economic development. In fact, the commercial core of the former village of Sheila is located at the intersection of Principale and Louis G. Daigle streets, hence the name “corner,” the business being on the corner of those two streets. Corner Store started out as a general store, the first of three, owned by Edmund Roussel. Built circa 1929, it offered for sale all of the basics required by a family, such as food and clothing. Several businesses, including the post office and a second general store, have been housed in this building.

Corner Store still maintains the traditional boomtown parapet façade which was common in rural areas in the early 20th century. A unique feature of this former general store is the corner entrance, enhancing the functionality of its location at the intersection of two streets.
