Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

The Mosquito Schoolhouse is a wooden, one-room, one storey hip roofed building. Constructed between 1818 and 1828 it is located on the main access road to Bristol’s Hope, NL. The designation is confined to the footprint of the building.

Heritage Value

The Mosquito Schoolhouse is designated because of its historical associations and aesthetic value.

The building has historical value because of its associations with early education in Newfoundland. Built by the Colonial and Continental Church Society (Newfoundland School Society) under the direction of a Rev. Kingwell, the building was used as a school for more than one hundred years. The Mosquito Schoolhouse is a reminder of the formative days of organized education in the region.

The building has aesthetic value as its design and construction provide a rare example of how wooden schools were built during the nineteenth century in outport Newfoundland. This simple one-room design was a trend in school construction well into the twentieth century.
