Statement of Significance
Description of Historic Place
St. George Superior School Bell is a 90kg brass bell on a red granite cairn located at the main entrance to St. George Town Hall. The designated area includes a small garden bordered by a curb.
Heritage Value
St. George Superior School Bell is designated a Local Historic Place for its recognition of the location of a former school.
St. George Superior School Bell is recognized for being the only remaining artefact from the St. George Superior School. The school was built in 1888 when four smaller schools were merged. The brass bell, located atop a red granite cairn, is located on the site of the school, which served the community until it was demolished in 1979. The bell was made by Henry McShane & Co. from Baltimore, Maryland in 1889. A small garden around the monument makes the site an attractive civic space.
