Statement of Significance

Description of Historic Place

538 Harvey Street, also known as the Henry Myers Cottage, is a Regency cottage set in residential Peterborough close to the Otonobee River and the County Courthouse. The property has been recognized for its heritage value by the City of Peterborough Bylaw 1985-057.

Heritage Value

The Henry Myers Cottage's heritage value resides in its well-preserved state. It is one of the very few buildings in Peterborough to retain the original lattice trellis on the front verandah. Constructed in 1858, Henry Myers built the present cottage onto the original log cabin on the site and covered the structure with stucco. It is a good example of the Regency cottage style.

The Henry Myers Cottage is also important for its association with the early settlement of Peterborough. Throughout the years the cottage itself has been home to the descendants of William Dixon, one of the earliest pioneers in the Peterborough area.
